The essay engages with Pierre Hadot’s thought by retracing the nexus between philosophy as a way of life and the practices and exercises that follow from it. It then addresses the link with biography, since the determination of a way of life is necessarily tied to lived experience which, in turn, must be reflected upon and revisited in its historical, cultural, and social determinations. From this approach derives what I have called in my writings the “biographical method,” which aims to integrate into the orientation toward philosophy as a way of life a reflection that, within the nexus of history and biography, also considers the possible contribution of depth psychology.
