At Mr. Riderhood’s Bedside: the Freedom That Makes All the Difference

Abstract

To reread Deleuze’s latest writing, “Immanence: a life...” means, on the one hand, to find oneself before a text that has become indispensable in the debate on immanence in philosophy. On the other hand, however, the reader cannot but feel a pinch of disappointment for the opacity of the examples proposed in those pages by Deleuze. Neither literary nor philosophical references succeed in shedding light on the French philosopher’s latest text. The purpose of this article is to accompany the reader in a non-conceptual experience of the text, crossing that opacity in order to sustain it, and not to direct it. It is from this perspective, in fact, that it is possible to renounce the temptation to explain immanence with the Deleuzian language, in order to access its most powerful content: its being an experience of freedom.
