Beyond secularization? The controversy between Strauss and Löwith on the “repetition” of the ancient.

Abstract
The essay analyses the correspondence between Karl Löwith and Leo
Strauss, from 1935 to 1946, which constitutes one of the most interesting documents for reconstructing the position of the authors, protagonists of 20th-century thought, regarding the judgment on modernity, Christianity and classical
antiquity. The point of separation is in the ‘repetition of the ancient’. United by the fascination of the Greek world, otherwise differently interpreted, Strauss and Löwith are clearly divided on the idea that this world, centered on the idea of nature, can return current one day. At the center of the reflection falls so the querelle des anciens et des modernes giving way to the two interlocutors to reveal their thinking according to a very particular relevance.
