Abstract

The article points out that, on a philosophical level, the main analogy
between Karl Löwith and Hans Jonas consists in the return to the question of
nature. Both believe that life and mind cannot be reduced to the mechanical
matter of modern science. That is, it is necessary to extend the domain of life
and mind to matter. In this common extension, Löwith and Jonas differ in the
breadth they attribute to it. Löwith extends life and mind to the whole matter,
including the inorganic one, Jonas instead to the only organic matter, beginning
with the primitive forms of metabolism. The reason for this difference is to be
found in the different evaluation of the creation of the world peculiar to Jewish
and Christian tradition.
